What’s New in Chattanooga 2012-2013

The Crash Pad Hostel to Open New Restaurant (Spring 2013)
The new Flying Squirrel will be located adjacent to the Crash Pad, but will be facing the opposite direction as not to interrupt the overnight guests. The intimate restaurant & bar will serve the late-night and weekend visitors to the Crash Pad and the Southside District and will be a place for social interaction, playing along with their “community” feel. The building will be made of glass walls on three sides with a 25-foot-tall space held up with exposed steel trusses, timbers and duct work. The Strauss Co., Inc. is the local contractor handling the project. The Crash Pad is an upscale boutique hostel and features all of the amenities you’d expect to find at a business hotel, including free 24-hour computer and wifi access. Locally owned and operated, the owners focus on locally sourced products and craftsmen. The offer free private parking and plenty of storage space for outdoor gear, making them the ideal hostel for climbers, backpackers, and adventurers.

25,000 Sq Ft Climbing Gym & Rock Creek Outfitter to Open Downtown (July 2013)
This project will cost an estimated $4 million to renovate the 16,500 square foot space that will be called The Block. The Block will be the High Point Climbing and Fitness consisting of a 25,000 square foot indoor climbing/bouldering wall (40 feet high of climbing); an exterior public art piece that will also be a climbing wall; the 38,000-square foot Rock/Creek, a Chattanooga-based specialty outdoor retailer (fourth location) that will feature outdoor apparel and equipment from top brands for sports including kayaking, rock climbing, hiking, camping, trail running and adventure racing; and a fitness facility that will include equipment rental, lessons and coaching, youth programs, special group programs, competitions, cardiovascular and weight training equipment, yoga classes, massage therapy, locker room and shower facilities, pro shop for gear purchase. Construction will begin in January and the project is estimated to be complete in Summer 2013.

Lake Winnepesaukah’s New 5-Acre Water Park (Summer 2013)
The multi-million dollar 5-acre waterpark will feature a lazy river, wave lagoon, flume body slides, enclosed tube slides and side-by-side racer slides, and a splash park for toddlers. It will also offer covered and uncovered lounge seating, retail shops, concessions and a changing facility. Construction will begin in January and be complete in Summer 2013.

Bike Share Program
Chattanooga’s new Bike Share Program includes 30 stations with 300 bicycles throughout the downtown, North Shore, Southside, TN Riverpark and University of Tennessee-Chattanooga areas.

Tennessee Aquarium’s “River Giants” Exhibit
River Giants features an awesome collection of freshwater species that can reach almost legendary sizes including coffee-table sized whiprays, giant pangasius catfish, a seven-foot beluga sturgeon and a menagerie of other fish found in remote rivers and lakes from around the world.

Chattanooga Zoo’s “Deserts & Forests of the World” Exhibit
The “Deserts and Forests of the World” exhibit showcases over 30 species in their natural habitats including sloths, fennec foxes, meer kats, chinese alligators and a variety of rare, venomous snakes, many of which are critically endangered.

Track 29 Live Music Venue
Chattanooga joins the ranks of world-class entertainment venue locations with Track 29, located on the historic Chattanooga Choo Choo campus. Track 29 features national touring acts and local bands representing a range of genres; state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems; ample parking; full bar; a sound-equipped outdoor smoking area; VIP skybox.
