The Chattanooga Story

Steeped in a rich history based on its legacy as a major railroad hub, access to the Tennessee River and location at the junction of four major interstates, Chattanooga has received national recognition for the inspiring renaissance of its historic downtown and for its beautiful riverfront development.

Chattanooga boasts an extensive greenway system which includes more than 15 miles of constructed river walks that begin downtown and meander through the historic art district and several parks. The city supports a downtown shuttle fleet of zero-emission electric buses for commuters and visitors to ride free of charge.

Downtown you’ll find the Tennessee Aquarium, several museums including the Hunter Museum of American Art and Creative Discovery Museum for children, an IMAX Theater, Bluff View Art District, sports teams such as L.A. Dodgers farm team the Chattanooga Lookouts and Chattanooga FC soccer, as well as annual events such as the Chattanooga Market, Riverbend Festival, 4 Bridges Art Festival, Southern Brewer’s Festival, Wine Over Water, Nightfall Summer Concert Series, RiverRocks, 3 Sisters Bluegrass Festival and the Southern Writers Conference to name a few.

Chattanooga features one of the most productive affordable housing programs in the nation, and is noted for leveraging development funds through effective public/private partnerships with significant civic involvement on the part of private foundations. In addition, Chattanooga just recently completed one of the largest citizen visioning processes ever conducted to set specific long-range goals to enrich the lives of residents and visitors.

The local economy includes a diversified mix of manufacturing and service industries, four colleges, and several preparatory schools known throughout the South. “Sustainability” is a key concept for industry and government working together for enlightened development.

With its scenic beauty, stable population and economy, civic vitality and cross-sector partnerships, fiscal integrity, and strategic location, Chattanooga is one of the most progressive and livable mid-size cities in the U.S. In the past decade alone, the city has won three national awards for outstanding “livability”, and nine Gunther Blue Ribbon Awards for excellence in housing and consolidated planning.
